June

Harwinton, CT

Saturday, June 4, 2011
11:00 AM
Harwinton Public Library
80 Bentley Drive
Harwinton, CT

Accompanied by Mary Deady, a lyric soprano who hails from Dublin. Together, they will present a program, in word and song, entitled From Song to Pen: Women in the Literature of Ireland.

The role women played in creating the literature of Ireland has been consistently neglected and undervalued. Women were often the village story tellers, the perpetuators – in word and song – of the Oral Tradition. They were also the dominant composers of traditional laments, in which is found some of the most intense poetry in the language. Women also inspired some of the great and unique character portraits in all of world literature. The two visiting Marys will explore the Irish feminine legacy in an hour that promises to be both educational and entertaining.
